Indian auto sector monthly update (January 2010)

- Maruti sold 95649 vehicles in Jan 10 as against 71779 units in Jan 09 a rise of 33.3% YoY basis and a 12.8% rise on a MoM basis.


- The C segment comprising Omni and Eeco showed a robust growth in the domestic market and grew by 40.8% on a YoY basis.


- Though the overall sales of the company showed a decent increase, the MUV segment which comprises Gypsy, Grand Vitara etc, registered a fall of 27.4% during the month compared to sales in Jan 09 and fell about 47.9% on a MoM basis.


- In the A3 category comprising of SX4 and Swift Desire there was a rise of 40.8% in the sales numbers whereas the A2 segment showed a healthy growth of 24.8% on a YoY basis but on a MoM basis the rise was 14.7% and 12.1% respectively.


- Exports were up by 205% on a YoY basis at 14562 units in Jan 10 against 4774 units in Jan 09. The company?fs exports were mainly driven by A?] Star and Ritz in Europe.


- The company has been facing pressure of the increasing input costs. Thus the company has increased prices marginally for most of the models in January 2010.


- The company has planned a ramp up in the Manesar plant thus increasing its production by 250000 units per annum by FY12.

 

 

 

- Tata Motors reported sales of 65478 vehicles (including exports) for the month of Jan 10, a growth of 77.3% as compared to 54345 vehicles sold in Jan 09 and a rise of 20.5% on a MoM basis.


- A major growth was witnessed in the exports which grew 167% on a YoY basis but fell by 5.2% on a MoM basis.


- The M&HCV segment grew by 170.2% on a YoY basis from 5811 units in Jan 09 to 15702 units in Jan 09.


- The sales in the LCV segment has witnessed a growth of 75.2% on a YoY basis to 20255 units in Jan 10 from 11562 units in Jan 09 as well as on a MoM basis of 11.2% from 18217 units in Dec 09.


- The sales of Utility vehicles grew by 21% in the month of Jan 10 to 3538 units from 2925 units in Jan 09 and a growth of 106.9% on a MoM basis.

 

 

 

 

- Ashok Leyland reported sales of 7871 units in Jan 10 as against 2444 units in Jan 09, a flambuoyant growth of 222.1% on a YoY basis and a growth of 29.1% on a MoM basis.


- An all round growth was witnessed in the domestic sales across all the segments which were up by 268.2% on a YoY basis. However the exports witnessed a fall of 1.7% on a YoY basis and 27% on a MoM basis.

 

 

 

 

- Mahindra & Mahindra reported total sales of 47028 units in Jan 10 as against 27370 units in the corresponding month last year, a growth of 71.8% YoY basis and 29.1% growth on a MoM basis.


- Most of the segments showed a growth on a YoY basis and on a MoM basis the growth has been witnessed across sectors in the domestic market.


- Exports for the month of Jan 10 stood at 2115 units as against 612 units in Jan 09, a robust growth of 245.6% on a YoY basis.


- The Farm Equipment sales showed a growth 68.7% on a YoY basis and 38.3% on a MoM basis.

 

 

 

 

Bajaj Auto

- Bajaj Auto?fs two wheeler sales grew by 111.2% at 233049 units in Jan 10 as against 110363 units in Jan 09 and on a MoM basis it was up by 5.7% at 220429 units in Dec 09.


- The three?]wheeler segment registered a growth of 50% on a YoY basis and 4.4% on a MoM basis.


- Owing to the success of the brands, Pulsar and Discover and the subsequent variants of the brands the company?fs market share has increased to 32% from 21% on a YoY basis in the two wheeler segment.


- The company has increased the prices ranging from Rs. 500?]1000 across both the brands since January 2009 which will help in covering part of the pressure being faced due to the increasing raw material prices.

 

 

TVS


- TVS reported sales of 127288 in Jan 10 as against 94195 units in the corresponding month last year which shows a growth of 35.1%.


- Its motor cycle segment sales increased by 23.7% and 2 wheelers sales figures showed an increase of 63.8%. The exports grew from 14000 units to 17784 units up 27% on a YoY basis.


- The company?fs 3?]wheeler sales have been gearing up rapidly. The company sold 1710 units in Jan 10 as against 466 units in Jan 09 a growth of 37.3% on a YoY basis and 6.9% on a MoM basis.

 

 

Hero Honda


- Hero Honda?fs motorcycle sales were up by 23.3% on a YoY basis at 389000 units in Jan 10 and 3.5% on a MoM basis.


- The company will be launching a couple of models in the coming 2 months.
