Tech giants are working to boost employee diversity by hiring more women.

Recent past has shown diversity reports that have spurred a national debate over the lack of gender diversity at Silicon Valley's tech companies and how to improve gender and race ratios for employees.

In the past year, Apple Inc. (AAPL - Nasdaq) reportedly hired over 11,000 women globally - a 65% increase from previous year. As of September 2014, Apple had 92,600 full-time employees.

Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook said in a message posted on the company's website, "In the first 6 months of this year, nearly 50 percent of the people we've hired in the United States are women, Black, Hispanic, or Native American."

Cook maintained there was "a lot" more work to be done.

In June, Google Inc. (GOOG - Nasdaq) reported that during 2014, 21% of tech hires were women. The increase in hiring of women boosted overall number of women in technical roles by 1%, as part of efforts to increase gender diversity.
